Matthew Paul Turner on Fear

Matthew Paul Turner's church has been doing a series on fear. They asked him to write and present an essay on the subject. Matthew's a great writer, and I think the video is worth six minutes of your time to view.

So what's it worth to you?

Retreat 2009 is coming up in a week and a half. The retreat is about stepping aside, slowing down, spending time with God. Our theme this year is "Coming to God." We'll look at how we approach to God, how God sees us and spend some time looking at the very basics of prayer.

One of our desires is to never let money get in the way of ministry. There are always economic realities to what we do, but we do our best to manage that part so it doesn't interfere with what God wants to do in us.

The last few years we've gone with a "pay what you can afford" approach. We've only ever done limited fundraising, so in previous years the church has covered any gaps. That options just isn't available this year, so we need to do things differently.

We have a limited amount of scholarship funds available. If you cannot afford the full registration cost, please contact us. We know this is a special time, and we want as many people as possible to attend.

Maybe I sound like any other youth pastor or preacher, but I don't care. I'm sensing something brewing. Our Father is at work in this retreat. It's about restoration and being able to be comfortable in our own skin and in His hands. Be ready. Be watching. Be open. There's a Father who loves you and longs to share life with you.

Christmas Party Time

We're having a Christmas party on Saturday, December 20 from 6PM to whenever. We'll hang out, eat, listen to music, watch a Christmas classic and exchange gifts.

Here's the catch. You can't buy a gift. You have to bring a gift, but it has to be something you already have, something you want to re-gift or something you make. If you make a gift, you have to already have the supplies to make the gift. You can also give a gift of your time or...I don't know. Get creative. You just can't spend any money on the gift.

If you have suggestions for an appropriate Christmas movie to watch, shoot me an email or leave a comment.

NoiseTrade

NoiseTrade has made it through to the finals of the Open Web Awards in the music category against two popular online music services, Pandora and Last.fm. I'd really love to see NoiseTrade win because I love co-founder Derek Webb, I think it's a great concept and it's been implemented really well. NoiseTrade is innovative, and they haven't stopped innovating.

NoiseTrade is a great company co-founded by musician Derek Webb after he gave away over 80,000 copies of his Mockingbird album online in an effort to generate new fans. NoiseTrade allows you to download albums for free by telling five friends about the album or by paying whatever you think the album is worth. Neither NoiseTrade or the artist keep your friend's email address. NoiseTrade just sends them an email and lets the music do the talking.

So, please go vote for NoiseTrade. You can use this handy widget to vote. After you vote, make sure to post it to Facebook, MySpace or Twitter.

About NoiseTrade

Artists want to know, connect with, and be supported by music fans. Music fans want high-quality, free (or variably priced) music and to be rewarded, not punished, for sharing the music they love with their friends. We believe that if artists and fans work together, everyone can get what they want.

"A great record is its own best marketing tool," says Derek Webb, singer/songwriter and Co-Founder of NoiseTrade. "All the marketing dollars in the world can't accomplish what one great record can, especially if it's set free to roam around and connect with the right people." In 2006 Webb gave away his ‘Mockingbird' record for free online, asking in return for a little information (name, email address, and postal code), and as part of the process, for fans to invite their friends to download as well.

In three month's time Webb gave away over 80,000 full downloads of his record and collected valuable information for as many new fans. In addition, Derek has since seen many sold out shows and increased merchandise and record sales, including a curious spike in sales of the very record that was given for free.

It was the massive success of this experiment that inspired Webb, with the help of a few trusted friends, to start NoiseTrade. Now any artist can freely distribute their music online, via NoiseTrade's remarkable and embeddable widget, offering fans the choice to tell 5 friends or to pay any amount in exchange for an immediate download.

"Who needs peer-to-peer when you can have artist-to-fan?" Derek concludes, "If artists and fans realized how they could help each other and started making direct connections, without a middleman, the whole industry would change overnight. It would start a revolution."

Go to NoiseTrade.
